His Face All Red

http://emcarroll.com/comics/faceallred/01.html

This is a comic that is:

Beautifully coloured and drawn,
Masterfully told,
And hauntingly concluded.

Awesome way to commemorate Halloween.

Emily Carroll, the artist, is an animator living in Vancouver, and she's also illustrated for Brave New World!

The lift was crowded with men from the Alpha Changing Rooms, and Lenina’s entry was greeted by many friendly nods and smiles.  She was a popular girl and, at one time or another, had spent a night with almost all of them.

Like so. (Picture from here: http://picturebookreport.com/2010/08/02/short-reports-emily-carroll-vs-brave-new-world/)

I really love her art (:

subnormality

More plugs for more comics, in case anyone still visits. School is BUSY. You know the drill, click on the comics to view 'em larger. I don't want to steal traffic, hoho.

This guy, who draws Subnormality, is known for how wordy his comics can sometimes get. But somehow he always gets away with it because of how well written they are. (Some of the comics have a more mature theme on occasion, and can get really crazy.) And he's never gone to art school, fancy that! You don't really need to go to school to do art. Sounds ironic coming from me, no?

Anyway, I love it when he does pieces like the one below and above, little thoughtful commentaries on various aspects of life.

copper

For a webcomic that at best updates monthly or not at all for more than a year (it hasn't updated since early 2009 I think), Copper's still pretty loved, and that's really sayin' something :D

Loved enough to come out with a book of all the pages so far, in fact. It's at heart a comic about a boy and his dog as they wander through a fantasy landscape, and it reminds me a quite a bit of Calvin and Hobbes :D

Aside from the lovely art and linework, often there is a moral or two quietly plopped down at the end, and it leaves you in a thoughtful mood most of the time.

Thursday

The Secret Knots

Discovered a pretty interesting webcomic some time ago with the gorgeousest colours and expressive art + interesting ideas and a narrative that runs like poetry. Archives reveal a variety of styles, too ;)

(So even if you don't care much for the art, the ideas may inspire. But how can you not care for the art ;P)

Work and writing by Juan Santapau.
